Writing

At Lunsford Primary School we want all children to be able to confidently communicate their knowledge, ideas and emotions through their writing and reach their full potential. We want to prepare children with the essential writing skills they will need for later life by providing an enriched and engaging English curriculum, where they write with a clear purpose across all subjects.

We are committed to promoting a love for writing and not only giving children opportunities to write in English lessons, but in the wider curriculum too.

At our school, we follow the Literacy Tree book-based approach to English, placing high-quality, modern children’s literature at the heart of our curriculum. Each term, we explore a carefully curated selection of core texts that span a wide range of genres, authors, and text types. These books are chosen not only for their literary merit but also for their relevant themes that spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and reflect the diverse world our children live in.

Through this immersive approach, children develop strong reading comprehension and writing composition skills. But the impact goes deeper: Literacy Tree also provides a structured pathway for building vocabulary and spelling. Children encounter rich, ambitious language in context, and are taught to understand, use, and spell new words with confidence. Spelling is embedded within meaningful writing tasks, helping children see the purpose and power of language.

Our whole-school curriculum goes beyond the page. It blends literature with creative classroom experiences that bring stories to life—whether through drama, discussion, or cross-curricular links. This ensures every child is not only learning to read and write, but also learning to think, imagine, and express themselves.
