Spelling
At Lunsford Primary School, we take a thoughtful and engaging approach to spelling, helping children become confident and curious wordsmiths. We use two complementary programmes to support spelling development across the school: Spelling Shed and Spelling Seeds.
Spelling Shed is a fun, interactive platform that children can access both in school and at home as part of their weekly homework. It offers a wide range of games and challenges that reinforce spelling patterns and rules in an enjoyable, game-based format.
Alongside this, we use Spelling Seeds, part of the Literacy Tree curriculum. This scheme introduces children to challenging and enriching vocabulary drawn directly from the high-quality texts they are reading in class. Spelling is taught in context, helping children understand not just how to spell words, but also how to use them effectively in their writing.
As children encounter new vocabulary, they are encouraged to explore the meaning, usage, and structure of each word. This deepens their understanding and helps them apply new language confidently across subjects. By stretching their vocabulary in meaningful ways, we empower children to express themselves with precision, creativity, and flair.
Together, these programmes ensure that spelling is meaningful, memorable, and fully integrated into our wider English curriculum.
