British Values
At Lunsford Primary School, we value and celebrate the diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences of all our pupils, families and the wider school community.
We are committed to promoting the fundamental British Values identified by the Department for Education:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
These values are embedded throughout our curriculum, school ethos and daily interactions. We aim to prepare our children to become respectful, responsible and active citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
Democracy
We encourage children to have a voice and to participate in decision-making across the school.
Examples include:
- Elections for roles such as Head Boy, Head Girl, School Council and Eco Council Representatives.
- Opportunities for pupils to share their views through surveys, questionnaires and pupil voice activities.
- Learning about democracy through assemblies, curriculum subjects and national events.
- Involving pupils in important aspects of school life, including leadership processes where appropriate.
The Rule of Law
We help children understand the importance of rules, laws and responsibilities.
Examples include:
- Our Golden Values underpin expectations for behaviour and learning.
- Clear and consistent expectations of behaviour throughout the school.
- Opportunities to learn about laws and the role they play in keeping people safe.
- Visits from external agencies such as the Police, Fire Service and Ambulance Service.
- A zero-tolerance approach to bullying, aggression, discrimination and violence.
Individual Liberty
We support children to make informed choices and develop independence within a safe and supportive environment.
Examples include:
- Encouraging children to take responsibility for their actions and learning.
- Promoting self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience.
- Teaching pupils about their rights, responsibilities and personal safety.
- Delivering online safety and PSHE education to help children make safe choices.
- Providing leadership opportunities and roles of responsibility throughout the school.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
Respect is at the heart of our school community. We encourage pupils to value and celebrate differences while showing kindness and understanding towards others.
Examples include:
- Promoting respect through our Golden Values and daily interactions.
- Teaching about different cultures, faiths and beliefs through the curriculum.
- Challenging discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes.
- Welcoming visitors from different faiths and backgrounds to enrich learning.
- Visiting local places of worship and learning about different communities.
- Encouraging discussion and understanding through Religious Education (RE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education.
Through our rich and inclusive curriculum, children develop an understanding of the world around them and learn the importance of respect, equality, diversity and inclusion. By embedding British Values in all aspects of school life, we help our pupils become confident, compassionate and responsible members of society.
