"Geography helps people to make sense of the fast changing highly interconnected and interdependent world in which they live". For this to happen they need to know where places are, why they are there, what they are like, how they are linked and how they affect each other. This operates on a physical and human level. Place, Space and Environment are the key areas we consider. But at Lunsford, we want the children to have an opportunity to grasp more. We want children to be excited about the world around them, to be curious, to appreciate and encounter the diversity of life on earth.
Topics and methods of teaching have been adapted from the 2014 National Curriculum to suit our beliefs and policies. Topics taught across the Key Stages are often linked to other subjects and this is particularly relevant with History, PSHE, Art, Numeracy and to a greater extent Literacy, whereby topics may be explored through the use of drama, discussion and report writing.
Different methods are used to teach Geography and this may be by using non- fiction and fiction books, drama, the Internet, photographs, maps, cartoons, tables, film, diagrams and so on. Class trips out are also an important way of getting children to engage in their environment. Mapping skills are very important too, and begin with the Key Stage 1 children working out where there are in the school grounds itself by using a plan-view map.
During the year, Key Stage 1 children study the weather, compare hot and cold countries ,and enjoy a topic on China, as well as developing their mapping skills.
In Key Stage 2 we study the countries of Brazil and Russia and consider where our food is sourced from across the globe, and compare our local rivers with the River Amazon. We also endeavour to extend children's world knowledge by offering the chance to join the Globe trotters weekly after- school club, and by making the children aware of world and national charity days such as Water Week and Red Nose Day and what these achieve around the world. School charity efforts in the past have had a global dimension such as sending unwanted books to the library at Nabonggo school in Mbale, Uganda.
Assemblies such as discussion about refugees, also help to achieve our aims and values in Geography.
